Setting Up the Asterisk  Phone System at Home

The Asterisk phone systems are Linux-based VOIP PBX systems. PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange, and this refers to a division of the phone line within a building, be it a business or home. PBX systems are commonly used in businesses. Several phone lines come into the building and then are distributed to several individual extensions spread throughout the company. A few lines out of the building connecting to the phone lines are also part of the system, allowing outgoing calls. You typically have to dial a number, such as 9, to get one of these outside lines. Some people find that setting up a PBX at home is convenient, but not work the thousands of dollars necessary. With Asterisk, this type of system can be set up for relatively little cost.

The Hardware

There are some pieces of hardware that you will need to set up an Asterisk phone system in your home. One is a Linux server with an extra PCI slot. While the program can run on Windows based servers, it does not run well. Linux is a must if you want everything to run efficiently, as the Asterisk system was designed to be run on Linux. Most people find that a dedicated server works best for this application, especially if they are going to use a Windows based system. The system will need 40 GB of available disk space.

Besides a server, you will also need a Digium Wildcard TDM400P. This is the card that allows you to connect your phones and your phone line to the Asterisk server and the VOIP PBX system. The card has four ports, so you will need to decide how many lines you need. The ports can be configured to be incoming or outgoing, depending on your needs. Incoming ports take the phone line coming from outside of your home and connect it to the system, allowing you to receive calls. Outgoing ports allow you to connect your regular phone to the system, so you can receive calls. If you need more than four ports, you will need to buy an extra card.

Software

Once you have the hardware, you are ready to set up your operating system and install the Asterisk phone system software. The best way to do this and avoid the need for Asterisk consulting as you install the product is to download the ISO of Asterisk@Home. This will begin to install automatically and will reformat your disk if needed, so installing it on a machine that does not have important information on it first is a good idea. There are other ways to set up the system, but they are quite confusing.

Setting up the System

After you have installed the software, you can use the new Web server to view the Asterisk Management Portal. This portal has an interface where you can set up your system. The interface is fairly straightforward and has documentation to help with any questions that you might have.

Once you have the basic setup entered, you will need to add your extensions. This is simple to do on the "Ring Group" screen. Simply add the number of extensions you intend for your home to have. This is also the page where you will configure your voicemail box. To record your voicemail messages, call the chosen extension from a phone inside your system and record the message.

The final step to completely configuring your system is configuring the rules for incoming calls. You can choose whether you want to have the calls go to the phones or an operator, where the caller can choose an extension. Once you have made these choices, you are ready to start using your new VOIP PBX system!

Once installed, Asterisk phone systems work much like a regular PBX system. You simply pick up the phone, dial the extension for an outside line, and make your call! Soon you will forget that you are using a high-tech VOIP PBX Toronto system at all as your new phone setup becomes part of your daily life.

Because the ATA that most VOIP providers use simply plugs into a broadband
internet connection, business travelers can even take an ATA and telephone with
them to hotels or other locations and still have access to their business phone
and VOIP service simply by plugging in to an available connection. Software
known as a ’softphone’ can also be installed on any laptop with a microphone,
speakers or headphones, and a wireless internet card so that VOIP calls can be
placed without the need to travel with an ATA and physical
telephone.

Choosing the Right VOIP System for Your
Business

There are a number of Voice Over Internet Protocol service providers who
could compete for your business, so it’s important that you choose the right
service provider for the needs of your business. Stop to consider the size of
your business and the services that you will require, and begin shopping around
to see which provider offers you the best deal on the features that you want.
Make sure that you are watchful for gimmicks or services which require
additional provider-specific hardware to be purchased in order to expand your
service; ideally you should be able to include existing business phones in the

The response tallies are immediately available to you, and also recorded in a database record for each participant.

Additional Follow-Up

At the end of the teleconference, any individual that didn’t have the opportunity to ask their question can be transferred to voicemail, at your discretion, to pose their question or leave comments. Those messages and the appropriate contact information are recorded and sent to you or your designated representative for further action.

The system is already up and running so there is no need to buy any hardware of software to begin using the service and there is no set up fee. Billing is done on a pay as you go basis and there are no overhead or maintenance costs.

All in all, telephone town hall services will continue to grow in popularity because it is the best way to reach thousands of people instantly at a fraction of what postage would cost to send direct mail. But more importantly, you can actually stay ahead of the informational curve and get the proper information out those people whose opinions count, while interacting with them in personal way. What is a Virtual PBX System?

A virtual PBX system is a software solution that allows you to manage your phone number(s) and / or extensions. In reality a virtual PBX system does not even need to manage more than one number. It can provide you with a local or 800# number that customers call and then forward those calls to your cell phone, home office number or even directly to a voice mail box.

The reason companies and individuals are investigating these types of solutions are manifold. Just a few short years ago, PBX systems used to be expensive hardware solutions that you implement "on premise." What this means is that an IT staff would have to take the hardware and put it into a telecom "center" in your office, load up software, code the system to physical phones in your office, and maintain and troubleshoot any problems that come up.

Virtual PBX systems essentially rid you of the worry of cost, installation, maintenance and support. There are a number of companies out there offering these types of solutions. Not all of them, though, deliver on the promise of installation ease, set up and use… let alone the cost of ownership.

One product in particular, a virtual PBX system, is extremely easy to set up and costs a fraction of an "on premise" solution. In fact, there’s no comparison.

Let me explain what this virtual PBX system does and I think you’ll get the point. My small business uses the $49.99 version for unlimited minutes. What I get is a dedicated 800 number, a dedicated fax number, and 10 extensions.

First off, the 800 number is the only number now that I give out to clients. Why? Because if they call during "business hours" they are either greeted by a live receptionist (in our case) or the client can also be answered with an automated greeting directing them to one of our extensions. For example, "Thank you for calling XYZ Company. For a company directory, please press 109."

Once an extension is entered, the call is then routed to any one of my phone numbers. In my example, I have two cell phone numbers and a home office number. All of the numbers can be programmed to ring simultaneously or in sequential order. This is a tremendous idea because then clients don’t need to know your personal phone numbers, nor even know that they are not calling you at a physical office.

Another really cool feature of a virtual PBX system is its outbound caller ID feature. You can essentially dial out to a client where the caller id shows your "office number", not the actual number you are calling from. Why would you want to do this? Again, to give the illusion that you are calling from a physical office, not your home or cell phone number. The tip to doing this with the virtual PBX system is to call your assigned 800 number, press *, enter your code, press 3 to dial out, enter the person’s phone and press #. Looks complicated, but it’s very simple – 800#, *, code, 212-555-1212, #. That’s it!

These crimes are committed by setting up a site that is identical to a genuine bank site or sites like PayPal. Then, the phishing site sends out a mail requesting for bank or credit card details with link to the bank website. If the user clicks on this site, he will be directed to a phishing site which grabs all the details he enters. The hacker can make use of this information to carryout transactions.

Another phishing crime is to request the customers to purchase articles from a phony online store. The offender collects few orders and disappears without delivering the goods.

Trojan Phishing is a phishing scam in which the criminal sets up a connection with Trojan infected systems and continues to obtain information from the systems. He may even install software such as keylogging software, which provides information about each and every keystroke. This sort of cybercrime involving the keylogging software is highly dangerous.

The above cyber crimes can be prevented by practicing the below given two simple measures:
Proper identification of the URL of the site before logging into the site.
Use of updated versions of firewall, spyware, browsers and the operating system.

Last note, beware of hackers and avoid becoming victims of cyber crimes. Government bodies throughout the world are working together to identify solutions for cyber crimes.
